What security settings should you use on Facebook? (Part 1)

Just because you are looking for a job, doesn’t mean you need to never post on Facebook again.

You’ve nailed your LinkedIn profile, you’ve figured out how to write a cover letter, now you have to  take charge of protecting and curating your online reputation.

Here’s are some simple steps to get you started.

1. How do others see you on Facebook?

As with anything to do with managing your online reputation, the first step is to find out exactly how others see you already and securing your facebook profile is no different.

To find out how others see your profile, sign in and go to your profile page and click the lock icon.

Click on Who can see my stuff and then View As

This tool lets you see what your timeline looks like to the public or a specific friend.

As a general rule, the information posted on Facebook is best kept private so the next step is to make some decisions on who you want to be able to see your posts.

Step 2. What security settings should you use on Facebook?

Now that you know the information that is available to the general public, it is time to start taking control of it.
Click on the lock icon and “Who can see my stuff”
This area requires some discretion but we normally recommend to our clients that only Friends have access to your posts.

By setting it here, you change who can see all of your post but you can also choose to specify the audience on individual posts so if there are certain posts you are happy for everyone to see (eg the fact you just completed an triathalon which can actually enhance your online reputation.)

Thanks for every one of your effort on this web site. My niece really loves participating in investigations and it’s really easy to see why. Most of us know all concerning the dynamic medium you render important ideas on the website and therefore recommend contribution from other ones on that situation so my daughter is now becoming educated a whole lot. Enjoy the rest of the new year. You’re performing a useful job.
